Money · what a month really costs

Cost of living in South Africa's nomad towns

The honest version: one line we can state exactly (coworking, because we checked it), and everything else sent to live, sourced links — because rent and groceries change weekly, and a made-up number helps no one.

How to read this page

Only the coworking prices below are hard numbers we verified against each venue. Rent, food, transport and data are linked to live searches and named third-party sources (Numbeo), dated — not invented by us.

What's fixed, and what varies?

For a remote-work month, coworking is the one cost you can pin down in advance — the venues publish it, and we checked it. Accommodation is the biggest and most variable line, swinging with town, season and how long you commit. Food, transport and mobile data sit in between and are best sanity-checked against a named cost-of-living source. So this page states coworking, and links everything else live.

Coworking — the one price we verify

Checked directly against each venue. A desk is the one connectivity cost you can lock in advance, so it's worth pricing first.

Stellenbosch · Hello WorkHot & dedicated desks (daily/weekly/monthly) — current rates from the venue.
Hermanus · Co.UnityDay pass R375 · 30-day unlimited R2,550 · boardroom R255/hour (verified).
Worcester · HQ WorcesterFlexible coworking & virtual office — current rates from the venue.
Franschhoek · Hub in the HoekCo-op desks — current rates from the venue.
Paarl · Workshop17 TabakhuisHot desk from roughly €15/day or €186/month (~R3,700) (verified).
George · KanwerkHot desk R250/day or R1,000/month · dedicated desk from R2,000/month · private office from R5,000/month (verified).

Rent — check it live, per town

We don't quote rents, because they'd be stale by the time you read them. Book a flexible first month on Airbnb, then move to a South African rental portal for a longer, cheaper lease. Live searches per town:

Groceries, utilities & data

These are broadly similar across the towns and cheaper than most of Europe or North America, but we won't publish a number we can't stand behind. Cross-check current figures on Numbeo (South Africa) — crowd-sourced and dated — and see each town's "Living here — day to day" section for what's actually in town (supermarkets, pharmacies, fibre providers). For mobile data, the main networks are Vodacom and MTN; a prepaid SIM or eSIM gets you online on arrival.

Common questions

How much does it cost to live in South Africa as a nomad?+
Cape Town runs roughly USD 1,500–2,500/month all-in; the smaller verified towns generally come in lower, especially inland options like Worcester and George. The only fixed number we state is coworking (verified per venue). Everything else — check live.
Which town is cheapest?+
Worcester and George read as the more affordable options — inland/regional centres rather than Winelands or coastal tourist towns. We don't publish invented indices; compare live rental searches and Numbeo. See Cape Town alternatives.
What does coworking cost?+
See the verified table above — e.g. Co.Unity (Hermanus) R2,550/mo unlimited, Kanwerk (George) R1,000/mo hot desk, Workshop17 (Paarl) ~€186/mo.
